The Art of Menopause: Finding Harmony Through Ayurveda and Yoga

Feel Better Naturally: Ayurvedic Tips for a Calm and Nourishing Menopause

Menopause is a time when women need care and support from their families and communities. When women are free from stress and fear, many difficult symptoms of menopause often disappear. However, when challenges do arise, Ayurveda offers effective and time-tested remedies.

In addition to specific herbal formulas like Shatavari powder or capsules and Brahmi, warm oil massages (such as Pitta oil or Baby Balance oil) and warm, nourishing meals are essential. Meals should include healthy fats such as oil or clarified butter (ghee), along with greens and mineral-rich foods. A less sweet diet is preferable, though complete abstinence from sweets is not required.

Sour, bitter, and astringent tastes are beneficial. A blend of almond milk with two to four dates makes a wonderful rejuvenating drink.

Sesame oil is suitable for all body types. Mustard oil is particularly good for kapha types, while coconut oil or ghee is recommended for pitta types.

All dietary choices, exercise, and yoga practices should be adapted to the season, individual constitution (prakruti), and current state of balance.

Whatever the situation, women must always consider their unique constitutional needs in terms of diet, lifestyle, and rest. As a sister science to Ayurveda, yoga offers many valuable tools for balancing the doshas and supporting women’s health. Meditation, pranayama, chanting, and asana are all key elements of a healthy and holistic lifestyle.

For thousands of years, Ayurveda has offered a respectful and nurturing approach to supporting women at every stage of life, helping restore and maintain balance in vata, pitta, and kapha. It is said that when balance is restored, we are happy in our minds, healthy in our bodies, and fulfilled in our lives.

Recipe for Shatavari Drink

I personally like to make a warm milk at night to help deepen my sleep and reduce hot flashes. Here is the tasty recipe:

  • 4 oz. unsweetened almond milk, warmed
  • 1 tsp organic Shatavari powder
  • pinch of ginger powder
  • 1/8 tsp. cinnamon
  • Honey or agave to taste

Preparation - While the milk is warming, measure your powders and drop them into a mug. Once the milk has warmed, add a small amount to the powders to make them into a paste.

Slowly add the rest of the milk, stirring as you go so that the herbs become well blended into the milk.

Add the honey or agave as needed

Enjoy!
